We’re all being formed all the time. The only question is what is forming us, and into what image are we being formed. Schools are intent on forming us into the image of their model student; advertisements seek to form in us the desires of their model consumer; jobs form us in the practices it takes to be a model employee. Again, we’re always being formed; the big question is just whether or not we realize what is forming us, and for what purpose.
At Fleetwood, we believe that true formation is formation into the image of Christ. It is in Christ that we learn what it means to be truly human, and so all of our practices are situated toward that end—forming people into Christlikeness. In our congregation, that happens through broader educational initiatives, through participation in formational Christian practices like Scripture reading and prayer, and through life together in small groups.
