Our church has been meeting in Surrey since 1961. At that time, a group of 45 families, mostly of recent Dutch immigrant origin, met at the old Canadian Legion Hall in Whalley for worship services. Soon they officially organized as "First Christian Reformed Church of North Surrey" and called Rev. Michael DeVries, who arrived in 1962 as their first pastor. By 1963 the church had grown to 300 members - enough to purchase land on 132nd Street and build their first worship place.
The church continued to grow under the leadership of several pastors: Michael DeVries 1962 - 1965; Herman Bade 1965 - 1970; Gordon Pols 1970 - 1974; Jacob Kits 1974 - 1978; Albert VandenPol 1979 - 1990.
By its 25th anniversary in 1986, the congregation had grown to nearly 600 members.
The decade of the 1980's was a time of pain for the congregation. The Christian Reformed Church was deeply divided about the role of women in church life, and came to the decision to allow women to be elders, deacons and pastors. Disagreement with this decision led a substantial group to leave our congregation.
The 1980s was also a time of new ventures. In 1987 another group left the congregation to form Hope Community church, an outreach ministry in Surrey. Undaunted by the reduced numbers, the congregation moved ahead in faith and renovated the church building in order to provide better space for worship, fellowship and education.
The 1990s were years of growth and change. In 1990 pastor Albert Westerhuis arrived and the church began to re-group and re-equip itself for ministry. By 1994 the congregation numbered over 500 members and plans had to be made to accommodate new growth. Leadership began to identify the vision, goals and staffing needs of the growing congregation.
In 1996, unsolicited inquiries were received from churches wanting to purchase our building. After many meetings over the course of a year, the congregation approved the sale of the building. In 1998, the congregation took up temporary residence in the gym at the Surrey Christian Primary School in Fleetwood. Even in the gym the congregation flourished and grew to 650 members.
In May, 2000 the groundbreaking ceremony was held at our new location on 160th Street, with every member equipped with a shovel. In December, 2000 the congregation changed its name to Fleetwood Christian Reformed Church and in September, 2001 the congregation began worshipping in its new building. In 2002 the congregation called pastor Tom Bomhof as co-pastor to work alongside of pastor Westerhuis. The congregation currently has about 750 members.
