Church at Work initiative.

The church has left the building, because you are the church! The work of the church is the work that Christians do, and your work matters to God. It is more than a way to pass the time. More than a way to make money.

Your work is a way to express the vocation, or calling, God has placed upon your life.

God gives humanity its original job description in Genesis 1:28 when he says to Adam and Eve, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it.” (Genesis 1:28) Nancy Pearcy explains it this way:

“The first phrase, ‘be fruitful and multiply,’ means to develop the social world: build families, churches, schools, cities, governments, laws. The second phrase, ‘subdue the earth,’ means to harness the natural world: plant crops, build bridges, design computers, and compose music. This passage is sometimes called the Cultural Mandate because it tells us that our original purpose was to create cultures, build civilizations—nothing less.” (Nancy Pearcy; Total Truth, 2005, p 47)

Though the Fall has made our work more difficult, our job description remains much the same. It shows up again in Jeremiah as he writes instructions to the exiled Israelites.

“Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease. Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”” (Jeremiah 29:5–7, TNIV)

Your work matters to God, so it matters to us.

Our purpose is to help everyone connected to Fleetwood CRC be who God is calling them to be. We want to better understand the work each of you do on a daily basis, help you discern how God is working through you, and celebrate how you see God at work in your work.

To do this, we will be scheduling a visit to someone's workplace to do a short (one-hour) interview with them. Initially, we will shape the content of the interview for a blog post but we will also save the interview for use in other communication channels (including during worship in some way).

We pray that we will be able to see what God is up to through our church family, and praise him for it.
