  Advent 2009

Fleetwood Christian Reformed Church invites you to join us during the month of December to explore the Advent Conspiracy. Let's Change the way we do Christmas! The story of Jesus birth is a story of Promise, Hope, and a revolutionary Love. So, what happened? What was once a time to celebrate the birth of a Saviour has somehow turned into a season of stress, traffic jams and shopping lists. Is this what we really want out of Christmas? What if Christmas became a world-changing event again? Go to http://www.bclocalnews.com/surrey_area/ surreyleader/community/78693387.html for a news article on Fleetwood CRC and the Advent Conspiracy. Each Sunday morning at 10:00 from November 29 to December 20 we'll hear a message that helps us prepare for a simple Christmas, and in the evening we will have a special service to celebrate Christmas in different and meaningful way.

  Lent 2009

"Psalms of Lament"

Jesus' cry from the cross, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" echoes one of hte many laments found in the book of Psalms.  Words torn from the gut, wrenching expressions or sorrow, grief and despair have always been an integral part of Israelits history and the Judeo-Christian tradition. As we prepare for Easter during this season of lent we will experience the power of these psalms. They challenge us to stop relating to God at a surface level, saying and doing all the 'right' things, and to engage in authentic, genuine, from the heart, interaction with God.

March 1 - Introduction/Psalm 13

March 8 - Psalm 31

March 15 - Psalm 42

March 22 - Psalm 55

March 29 - Psalm 51

April 5 - Psalm 88 (Palm Sunday)

April 9 - Maundy Thursday - Service of Shadows

April 10 - Psalm 22 (Good Friday)

April 12 - Easter Service

  Evening Electives Spring 2009

Which Way to God - a Christian look at World Religions Part II

A continuation of the fall elective series - Christians believe Jesus is the only way to God - but what about friends and neighbours who practice other religions?  Together we will learn what the basic beliefs and practices of various world religions are and what it means to be a Christian in the context of these religions.  Over the 6 week period we will explore Sikhism and Buddhism.

Parenting with Love and Logic

Kids don't come with an owner's manual and sometimes parenting just feels like hard work.  Do you ever wonder where the love and fun went?  In this elective we will be discussing how to find ways to raise children who are self confident and ready to deal with the real world while you still maintain healthy parental control.

Delving into the "Deep Economy"

In this elective, discussion will be based on the book, "Deep Economy: the Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future" by Bill McKibben.   We will discuss the book and McKibben's ideas about how we should think about the things we buy, the food we eat, the energy we use, and the money that pays for it all.

Serving our Community - Service Projects for kids and teens

Over 6 weeks we will do various service projects for our community and organizations within it.  Baking cookies and other treats, making banners and cards, and more.  We will serve others but have a lot of fun doing it!

Read with Me, Craft with Me

For our youngest group (basically ages 5-7) we will do different stories and associated crafts every week.

  Evening Electives Fall 2009

BioEthics - “A Reformed Look at Life and Death Choices”, Ted Venema

Discussing Flannery O’Connor, Leanne Engbers

Join a discussion group on American writer Flannery O'Connor. Each week we'll discuss her wit, jarring story lines, and theological imagery in one of her short stories.

ESL (English as a Second Language) Café, Tim Antonides

Would you like to improve your English? Come join us for some coffee and conversation in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. It doesn't matter what your English level is or how old you are--anyone is welcome.

What’s Up with the Church Down the Street?, Tom Bomhof/Albert Westerhuis

In this elective we will explore the beliefs and practices of other Christian denominations and come to appreciate and understand the theology and worship practices of other Christians.

Team Mexicali, Sindy Jeske

Mexico Outreach 2010 here we come! This elective is for all grade 10-12 youth and adults that are interested in serving in our annual mission trip. This time will be spent learning about how to share the gospel in Mexicali and what to expect during the trip.

Read with Me, Craft with Me

Children from kindergarten to grad 2 will have stories read to them and will make a craft. Children should be able to handle scissors and glue.
