Roots and Growth

In the Hawaiian city of Lanai there is a banyan tree that has been there for over 140 years.

When it was planted the tree was only eight feet tall. Now it covers most of the two acre square. What's really cool about banyan trees? It grows roots from the branches.

In the picture you can see the roots hanging down, and the places where a root established over the years have grown into large stumps. This makes it look like there are numerous trees in the square, but if you look closely you will see that there are branches which connect them all to the main stump in the middle.

If the tree did not have the other supporting trunks, it could never grow to the size it has. If the main trunk in the middle decided it was going to be the only root, the tree would not have sufficient support or nourishment.

I wonder if the same is true of our own faith lives. If the only place we are being nourished in our faith is through the Sunday morning service, then our faith will not be able to grow as large or vibrant as if there are numerous places we are feeding our faith. These can be personal and/or family devotions, small groups, retreats, a spiritual mentor/coach, sharing our faith stories with others, fun events with Christian community, thinking deeply about the connection of faith and work, etc.

May you find numerous ways to grow your faith in Jesus, so it can grow big and vibrant!
