I realized this morning that Lent has started. In the days leading up to today, I’ve talked about it and thought of what to give up during this season. But now it’s here and I have to make good on what I’ve decided to give up. So here it is: I will steadfastly not click on any Facebook posts or web pages or read newspaper articles that have to do with Donald Trump. I’m finding that my time just gets sucked up into the drama that is unfolding to the south of us. Why do I need to know what he tweeted today, what order he penned, what outlandish statement he or his spokespeople made? Instead, in the words of my friend Tim, I will use that time to focus on meeting my neighbour, use that mental energy imagining ways that my city, town or neighborhood can better structure itself to be a resilient and interdependent place. I will also spend more time in prayer for my city, town and neighbours. I need to learn how Jesus’ sacrifice calls me to these places and people in service and love. So here we go. Another Lent is upon us with all its possibility for spiritual growth.
